Going on stage for the first time pushed my nerves to the limit.  But when I watched the video of my performance, it felt a lot worse that it looked.  I did not quite make the finals, but getting the experience is inspiring me to do it again.  (Competition Results click here).

This is definitely an event that I will continue to attend year after year.  Thank you all for hanging out and being cool.

Throw Score Yoyo Review Ep#7 – CLYW Manatee

53

Finally I got my hands on yet another CLYW yoyo masterpiece, the CLYW Manatee.  JD Steele at YoyoBestBuy let me borrow the Manatee to try it out and to give it a Throw Score review.  My original intent was to return it after the review but I decided to keep it after throwing it around for about a week.

The Manatee is very smooth right out of the box.  It leans on the heavier side at 67 grams.  It is a metal yoyo with a bead blasted finish.  The color way is super cool.  I was able to get the teal and red blend but when it spins, the yoyo actually looks like gun metal gray.

I have scored the yoyo in the video below and have laid out the total scores at the bottom of this web page.  I added a new category that scores the yoyo’s stability while at play.  I simply put a range between Floaty and Stable.  The higher the number the more stable and the lower the number the more floaty the yoyo feels.

The CLYW Manatee is easily a “goto” yoyo.  I highly recommend it to any serious yoyo player. It is a must have.

Check out the Throw Score video of the CLYW Manatee and let me know what you think.

California State Yoyo Competition 2017

53

After a week of stressing out, it finally happened, the California State Yoyo Competition 2017.

Why was I stressed, well as it was my very first competition ever! Even though going into it was nerve racking, it was so much fun. This year it was held at Jack London Square in Oakland. The venue was pretty cool, right by the warf near the Oakland/Alameda border. The weather was sunny with patchy clounds with just the right amount of cool breeze. It was perfect 🙂

The competition was pretty well attended. There were a lot of players who I have seen from the previous couple of years as well as new ones whom I have met. Overall everyone was cool.

YoyoBestBuy and YoyoStringLab was there showing the latest yoyos, string and gear. The even was sponsored by all the cool brands, OneDrop, MagicYoyo, Recess, YoyoFreaks, Buddhabearing, YoyoExpert, Yoyofficer, Unprld, Studio42, Spindoctors, MonkeyFingerDesign, JDEvents, National Yoyo League and Yoyohype.

Going on stage for the first time pushed my nerves to the limit.  But when I watched the video of my performance, it felt a lot worse that it looked.  I did not quite make the finals, but getting the experience is inspiring me to do it again.  (Competition Results click here).

The players whom I have met and spent time with that day felt more like a family.  Even though we come from different places and all  walks of life, I feel connected.

This is definitely an event that I will continue to attend year after year.  Thank you all for hanging out and being cool.

Check out the compilation video below of the event and let me know what you think.

Why I Don’t Compete in Yoyo Competitions

Many of you in the comments keep asking questions like, Why don’t you compete? or Why are you not competing? and You Should Compete.

Lorenzo if you competed earlier you would have been sponsored already. That is not really true. Renzo how come we do not see you on stage during competitions. Well, let me tell you why. Actually you know what let me show you why?

Check out the Video and let me know your thoughts.

Throw Score Yoyo Review Ep#6 – Luftverk MagicYoyo Skyva

53

I have had the pleasure of playing with the Luftverk MagicYoyo Skyva this week and it is a lot of fun.

Yoyo Specifications

Bearing Size C Size
Width 45 mm
Weight 66.5 grams
Diameter 58 mm
Response System 19 mm

The Luftverk MagicYoyo Skyva is a plastic yoyo.  The qualtiy of the plastic and the feel of it is of good quality.  The yoyo plays very well and is so fun to finger spin.

JD Steele at YoyoBestBuy let me borrow the Skyva to try it out.  I liked it so much I decided to keep it.  Priced at about $20 it is a good buy specially if you geek out on fingerspins.

The Skyva is very smooth right out of the box.  It leans on the heavy side at 66.5 grams.  Since it is plastic, the yoyo does not score well on Finger Grinds and Talon Grinds.  But this yoyo was not designed for those trick elements in particular.  The Luftverk MagicYoyo Skyva is all about Finger Spin.  And the design of the throw is spot on for that trick element.  Horizontal play is excellent using the Skyva.  In the video I executed the Harrison Hurricane and the yoyo felt awesome.

This is Throw is a must have in any Yoyoers collection.  At $20 it is an excellent buy that will give you so much joy as you finger spin and spin and spin and spin…

Throw Score Yoyo Review Ep#5 – YOYOFFICER Rave

53

I have had the pleasure of playing with the Yoyofficer Rave extensively.  This yoyo has quickly become one of my favorites.  Yoyofficer did a good job with this Throw.

To review, the Yoyofficer Rave is a bi-metal yoyo which I purchased at YoyoBestBuy at around $99.97.  Out of the box, the yoyo felt really smooth while at play and it throws really well.

The yoyo finish is glossy.  It is very smooth and grinds well. The  weight feel of the yoyo is on the heavier side.  Which makes this yoyo lean towards techy play styles rather than speedy.  The shape as well not being a “v” shape suggests it is designed more for techy style play.  But even so, when I put it through speed combinations, this throw powered through them swiftly without missing a beat.

Overall, the Yoyofficer Rave is a very nice bi-metal yoyo that should put a smile on the face of the techy player in you.  This is an excellent bi-metal yoyo.

Yoyo Unboxing – Yoyofficer Rave

53

The next yoyo I am unboxing is the Yoyofficer Rave.  I tried this yoyo once before and I really liked it so I thought why not get one for myself.

I got the green with purple splash that matches my other Yoyofficer yoyo called the Vector.   The colorway is really nice.  Yoyofficer did a good job with this Throw.

The Yoyofficer Rave is a bi-metal yoyo which I purchased at YoyoBestBuy at around $99.97.  Out of the box, the yoyo feels really smooth while at play but the response is not as strong.  However it still throws really well.

Something I noticed about Yoyofficer yoyos, the string that comes with it is really short.  So being a techy player, I like the strings a little longer so I just swap it out with Kitty Fat.

The yoyo finish is not bead blasted but rather it is on the glossy side.  However it is still very smooth and grinds well.  In term of weight feel, the yoyo seems to be on the heavier side.  Which makes this yoyo lean towards techy play styles rather than speedy.  The shape as well not being a “v” shape suggests it is designed more for techy style play.

My recommendation if you are considering buying this yoyo is to get additional response pads.  This should help in adjusting the responsiveness of the yoyoy to your liking.  Overall, the Yoyofficer Rave is very nice bi-metal yoyo that should put a smile on the face of the techy player in you.

Throw Score Yoyo Review Ep#4 – YoyoFreaks Your Mom

53

“100 Yoyos, 10 Color Ways, 1 Time Run,” that is what sums up YoyoFreaks Your Mom.  This is directly from the site http://yoyofreaks.com/.

With the plethora of yoyo companies and yoyo models out there, YoyoFreaks is doing something different, quality versus quantity.  There are only 100 yoyos made of this series.  So when they are gone, they are gone.

My first impressions were recorded in the unboxing video posted last week.  After a week of playing with this pro-quality throw, it has definitely made a great lasting impression on me.

First of the design and build quality is top notch.  The yoyo is bead blasted to a really smooth texture.  In fact the yoyo feels dead smooth.  The yoyo is slightly heavier compared to the OneDrop Kuntosh 5000QV .  This makes the yoyo lean more towards Techy play than pure speed play.  The yoyo grinds really well, however, fingerspins and horizontal play is not its strength.

YoyoFreaks Your Mom feels really good while at play.  Even though spin time is really measured as much anymore, this yoyo spins and spins and spins.  Because of these performance qualities, this yoyo will definitely help you power through tricks and combos. .

Here now is the Throw Score of Yoyo Freaks Your Mom:

With the 100 series gone, meaning it all sold out in a day gone, we are left to wonder what is next with YoyoFreaks.  Given the response of Throwers and the performance of this series, I hope we see JD release another another 100 series from YoyoFreaks.

With the plethora of yoyo companies and yoyo models out there, YoyoFreaks is doing something different, quality versus quantity.  This is the brain child of JD Steele   who created YoyoFreaks originally as a site for yoyo videos.  Now it is a site of the 100 series and after they are gone, they are gone.
